Physical Education (PE) helps pupils stay physically active, develop interests in different types of physical activity, build teamwork and other social skills, and improve focus and academic performance.
The delivery of physical education at Rockmount Primary School aims to inspire pupils to recognise their ability to succeed and excel in a wide range of competitive sports and other forms of physical activity within an inclusive, stimulating environment. Our broad and balanced PE curriculum, intends to support pupils to achieve and recognise their personal best, whilst also developing an understanding of healthy and active lifestyles. PE is a vital contributor to a child’s physical development and wellbeing. Therefore we ensure all children develop the fundamental skills and competence to become physically confident in competitions, team games and in the wider school environment.
Children participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week covering two different sports and skills per term.
In addition to weekly PE lessons, children are given a variety of opportunities throughout the school year to participate in an extensive range of inclusive extra-curricular activities that increase children’s physical activity. Such as judo, yoga and dance.
Pupils are taught positive values, such as fairness and respect, alongside core social skills, such as teamwork and effective communication.
At Rockmount Primary School, we ensure that our children are provided equal, inclusive opportunities to participate in a variety of sports through our PE curriculum that is progressive, engaging and fun. We help to motivate children through quality first teaching that enables them to develop fundamental skills and apply them to different activities. All children learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise and the positive impact it has on their wellbeing. Year 6 pupils leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently. Our children are physically active which has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Through our exciting and diverse PE curriculum, we encourage and equip children with the skills to develop a love of sport and physical activity. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.

The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme that was launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.
