Physical Education

Subject Overview

Physical Education (PE) helps pupils stay physically active, develop interests in different types of physical activity, build teamwork and other social skills, and improve focus and academic performance.

Intent

The delivery of physical education at Rockmount Primary School aims to inspire pupils to recognise their ability to succeed and excel in a wide range of competitive sports and other forms of physical activity within an inclusive, stimulating environment. Our broad and balanced PE curriculum, intends to support pupils to achieve and recognise their personal best, whilst also developing an understanding of healthy and active lifestyles. PE is a vital contributor to a child’s physical development and wellbeing. Therefore we ensure all children develop the fundamental skills and competence to become physically confident in competitions, team games and in the wider school environment.

Implementation

  • Children participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week covering two different sports and skills per term.

  • Through our partnership with CSSP(Croydon Sports Partnership), we are supported to delivers high quality PE lessons to all KS1 and KS2 classes.
  • We also have a high quality sports provision during playtimes and lunchtimes.
  • Pupils are taught a wide range of different sports, skills and activities including hockey, basketball, dance and football. All lessons centre on encouraging the children to recognise and achieve their personal best.
  • Teachers plan and deliver lessons in line with our whole school PE and Sport curriculum map and the LFC framework to ensure progression across the year groups.
  • Children participate in a wide range of competitions and festivals both inside and outside of school through our link with the Croydon School Sports Partnership.
  • All classes participate in 5-a-day, Go Noodle or the Active Mile on a daily basis to help pupils keep active throughout the school day and meet the 30 minutes of physical activity recommended by the DfE.
  • Through our links with the local community, we aim to enrich the curriculum further with unique opportunities that allow our children to try different sports and be talent scouted by outside providers such as, break dancing and diving.
  • In addition to weekly PE lessons, children are given a variety of opportunities throughout the school year to participate in an extensive range of inclusive extra-curricular activities that increase children’s physical activity. Such as judo, yoga and dance.

  • Pupils are taught positive values, such as fairness and respect, alongside core social skills, such as teamwork and effective communication.

Impact

At Rockmount Primary School, we ensure that our children are provided equal, inclusive opportunities to participate in a variety of sports through our PE curriculum that is progressive, engaging and fun. We help to motivate children through quality first teaching that enables them to develop fundamental skills and apply them to different activities. All children learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise and the positive impact it has on their wellbeing. Year 6 pupils leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently. Our children are physically active which has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Through our exciting and diverse PE curriculum, we encourage and equip children with the skills to develop a love of sport and physical activity. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.

School Games Mark

The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme that was launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across BRONZE, SILVER and GOLD levels of the mark. At Rockmount, we are proud to have received all these levels in the past years. We are pleased that we were awarded the Gold Mark for the academic year 2022/2023!
To be awarded the GOLD level, schools have to meet strict prerequisites that demonstrate an inclusive and supportive sporting ethos. These include:

  • Engaging at least 50% of all pupils in extracurricular sporting and physical activity every week.
  • Targeted clubs and provision for the least active children in school and enthusing them in sports.
  • Providing a variety of exciting opportunities for children to participate in competitions both inside and outside of school.
  • Providing opportunities for children to learn to lead through curriculum PE as part of the lesson structure.
  • Engaging at least 15% of children in leading, managing and officiating our school sport.
  • Utilising specialist sports coaches to support school sport.
  • Training teachers and the wider school staff to support school sport.
  • Have active links with sports providers in the community, including clubs and the delivery of taster sessions in school.
