Physical education also encompasses swimming and water safety. The school's aim is for all children, by the time they reach Year 6, to swim competently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres. Pupils will be taught to use a range of strokes effectively in order to keep themselves safe in the water, including how to perform safe self-rescue in a variety of water-based situations.
Our swimming lessons take place at Thornton Heath Leisure Centre for pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6. The sessions are for 5 weeks and last for 1 hour. The children are streamed dependent on ability by the pool instructor: beginner, intermediate and advanced.
There is a requirement that schools publish how many pupils within their year 6 cohort are meeting the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
